We have an exciting opportunity available for a Safety Management Supervisor. Under limited supervision, this position provides a thorough, professional level of hazard detection, risk evaluation, and improvement recommendations initially for underwriting purposes, but primarily focused on the benefit for the insured customer. Most of the workload will consist of the region’s largest, most challenging accounts. Between 40% and 70% of the work performed is expected to be consulting service work for customers receiving ongoing safety management service. You will also lead a staff of Safety Management Specialists by providing guidance that supports their successful management of a field territory consisting of customers, Account Management Specialists, Underwriters, and agencies. Support continuous improvement of work quality, monitor and evaluate staff performance, build and strengthen business partnerships, and assist the Regional Safety Operations Manager as required to meet department and regional objectives. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.


This position is in our Southwest Region, which covers AZ, CO, NM and UT.  The ideal candidate will be based out of Albuquerque, Salt Lake City or Arizona.


  • Assess the operations of large, more complicated commercial accounts to identify potential loss producing conditions and practices for each of the typical coverages provided to such customers. Determine reasonable control plans for those identified potential loss sources. Draft recommendations for improvement.  Advise underwriters of these conditions and recommendations for reducing the risk of loss. Submit recommendations to the customer and their agent. Document customer response to those recommendations and plans. 
  • Prepares quality written safety management reports to communicate and document risk evaluation to internal staff. Prepares quality written safety management business letters and special reports to communicate and document risk evaluation activities and results to external customers and agents.
  • Analyze the loss history of accounts to identify loss sources, trends in accident frequency and severity, reach meaningful conclusions from the analyses, and provide clear reports to customers, agents, and underwriters.
  • Mentor staff to continuously improve their capabilities in risk assessment and risk management and work to increase their knowledge of the coverage(s) for the industries we write. In addition to the administration and utilization of the Quality Assurance program, identify trends/areas needing development and conduct joint visits with staff to monitor for improvement in performance.
  • Develop effective and ongoing communication with Territory Managers and Lead Underwriters to assist in their success for new and renewal business opportunities. 
  • Consult with agents and customers to inform and advise of the staff's capabilities as well as serve as a key resource for technical information to internal and external business partners. 
  • Support and assist Regional Safety Operations Manager in; driving strategy and achieving corporate results, setting objectives for staff that are designed to promote the achievement of departmental and regional objectives, developing and implement succession plans, and recruit and acquire new talent.
  • Prepare and deliver high-level strategic, operational, and business related presentations to internal and external customers as applicable.
  • Provide oversight and approval of staff monthly expenses.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of risk management techniques and technology. Earn and maintain designations through self-education and training programs (i.e. application of nationally recognized codes and standards, appropriate state regulations in reducing the level of risk for customers). Independently seek opportunities to increase leadership and management capabilities by utilizing internal and external resources.
  • Must be able to drive an automobile to travel within territory. Car travel represents approximately 40-50% of employee’s time and a valid driver’s license


  • College degree is preferred.
  • Successful completion of INS 21 (Property and Liability Insurance Principles) and INS 23 (Commercial Insurance) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in assessing and managing risk in all major commercial lines of business developed through 7+ years of significant field based experience plus 3+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Able to understand and explain coverage exposures, controls and appropriate risk management techniques.
  • Strong problem solving abilities in strategic, operational, and business related issues.
  • Competent ability to apply OSHA, NFPA and other applicable technical standards.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills or traits and the ability to communicate with all levels of reporting structure.
  • Ability to travel and meet with customers and agents to assess and maintain risk.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and agents. Encourage continuous improvement and risk management strategies to reduce the level of risk and the potential for loss.
  • Must be able to build effective relationships with staff, agents, regional underwriting, management and peers.
  • Demonstrate a basic proficiency in usage of computer tools including: Internet research applications, Microsoft Office,
  • AuSuM, eSelect tools, Cognos reports, etc.
  • Must have valid state-issued driver’s license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.
