To perform desk reviews on automobile repair estimates with the purpose of insuring that it reflects the accurate repair parts, times and procedures necessary to restore a vehicle to its pre accident condition. The position also serves as a technical resource for adjusters, Team Leaders and managers. Exceptional customer service, ease of doing business with Selective, and accurate appraisal review will be an important focus of the position. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. 


Preferred Location: Hamilton, NJ or Richmond, VA

This position can sit in: Carmel, IN or Charlotte, NC 

For the right candidate: This position can be remote on the East Coast or Mid West


  • Conducts auto damage appraisal audits and prepares written estimates in accordance with company policies and Best Practices while representing the company in an ethical, professional manner at all times.
  • Contacts vehicle owners, garages or body shops to negotiate agreed upon price to repair damages.
  • Communicates verbally or in writing with internal personnel as well as insureds, agents, claimants, garage and body shops as needed regarding appraisals and the appraisal process.
  • Assists claim personnel in determining when a damaged vehicle should be classified as a total loss. 
  • Assists claim personnel with proper rental control through the establishment/discussion of accurate repair completion dates. 
  • Makes payments on qualified claims.
  • Obtains and maintains knowledge of various automobile estimating manuals and industry best practice guidelines. 
  • Keeps abreast of changes in the automobile industry and appraisal process.
  • Obtains appropriate auto appraisal license in jurisdictions where required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned including, but not limited to, Catastrophe assistance and auto damage training.


  • Background and knowledge of automobile, heavy truck, and heavy equipment repairing/estimating.
  • Experience with automated automobile estimating systems.
  • Experience in the use of computers for communicating, scanning, and Internet usage.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing to a team environment.
  • 5-10 years major carrier experience with appraisals and claims
  • 1-2 years garage or body shop experience preferred.
  • College degree preferred.
