  • Overview

    This position is responsible for the investigation, negotiation,
    and resolution by settlement of all first and third party
    automobile total loss claims.

    Investigates, negotiates and concludes by settlement or denial assigned auto claims through telephone, personal contact, and/or written correspondence.  These duties are performed consistent with company claims’ policies and procedures within prescribed authority and standards of performance. Specialties include one or more of the following: General Liability, Auto fire and theft, Auto total loss, Auto commercial and personal lines liability, Auto/PIP subrogation. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.


    • Receives assigned auto claims and independently reviews/analyzes the policy forms and endorsements to determine applicable coverages, limits, deductibles and settlement calculations, as well subrogation recovery opportunity
    • Gathers appropriate documentation to support the claimed damages through phone/email contact with customers, vendors, and police departments (includes estimates, proof of ownership/value, required company forms, reports, invoices, etc).
    • Reviews damage documentation to determine loss amount. Negotiates settlements based on documentation presented, vendor contact/discussions, personal knowledge and experience, customer discussions and policy language. 
    • Documents claim files, establishes and updates reserves throughout the life of the claim, maintains suspense system, processes expenses, prepares checks, updates MCS, and sends appropriate letters based on state regulations and company directives. 
    • Explores salvage and subrogation potential, as well as arbitration opportunity. 
    • Continuously reviews and analyzes investigative information to determine if file is eligible for fraud/SIU handling.
    • Enlists the assistance of vendors and/or other resources to help with remediation services or future analysis of auto damage or settlement values.
    • Reviews all claims continuously to determine whether loss/claim is best served in the Service Center or eligible for transfer to the field for further handling.
    • Ensures compliance with company, state and federal regulations.
    •  Investigation, coverage analysis, and settlement (as appropriate) of 1st and 3rd party automobile total loss claims.
    •  Monitoring and management of loss adjustment expenses and the establishment and monitoring of loss reserves.
    •  Accountable for compliance with state, company, and federal regulations regarding handling of total loss claims.
    • Responsible for related automobile salvage issues.
    • Processing releases, state forms, and all forms applicable to the handling of total loss claims.



    • Understanding of Commercial and Personal Auto policy language and endorsements
    • Adjuster licenses in states requiring same (obtain within 3 months of hire).
    • Damage evaluation and negotiation skills (review of estimates, contents replacement, etc)
    • College degree preferred
    •  A minimum one to three years experience handling automobile total loss claims for a P&C insurance carrier.
    •  Superior communication, presentation, customer service and negotiation skills as well as excellent organizational and time management skills.
    •  Must be proficient with Microsoft software and able to enter data effectively and efficiently via keyboard.
    •  Minimal travel may be required.
