    Selective Insurance is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our agile team and be a contributor to the development and implementation of projects within our Commercial Lines systems at our Glastonbury CT location. The successful candidate will be able to work well within a team of developers, communicate with product owners to clarify business requirements, and develop quality code within the expected timeframe and the provided architectural standards.  In addition to business analysts and architects, the candidate can expect to interface with QA, solution architects and team leadership to deliver successful results.  All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

    Responsibilities

    • Meet with business unit representatives and other subject matter expert to define and evaluate moderately complex business automation needs
    • Interpret business specifications to prepare for analysis/design functions
    • Develop, design, and analysis of systems and/or programs
    • Generate, test, and document program code
    • Debug and resolve moderate to complex problems
    • Modify existing applications programs or writes new programs of moderate to high complexity and scope, working with applications systems designs and specifications and utilizing standards, procedures, and techniques.
    • Independently perform problem determination and resolution in the production environment
    • Coordinate testing and debugging for programming changes and assist subordinates with debugging, whenever necessary
    • Prepare system documentation as required
    • Ability to quickly gain working knowledge of business data/user functions and have the willingness, capability, and desire to share knowledge and train others

    Qualifications

    • Strong development skills including C# and/or VB.net, MVC, SQL Server and/or Oracle, web services (WCF, JSON, REST, Web API)
    • Experience developing/supporting enterprise web applications including an understanding of ASP.net lifecycles, SOA, RDBMS and IIS
    • Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio
    • Experience using a source control system such as TFS or Git
    • Experience in the use and structure of databases (SQL, or some variant)
    • Ability to work well with others
    • Possesses good communication skills: verbal and written
    • Ability to think ahead and anticipate problems, issues and solutions
    • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
    • Familiarity with related development environments
    • College degree in Computer Science, Management Information Science, Business Administration or related field preferred
    • Two to five years of programmer/analyst experience

     

    Well-qualified candidates might have experience in some of the following:

     

    • Experience in agile or lean methodologies, specifically variants of Scrum
    • Experience with Team Services (VSTS), Jira or other agile project management tool
    • Knowledge and experience in Angular, .Net Core, client frameworks (JQuery, Knockout, etc.), entity framework are plus but not necessary
    • Web and/or Application security experience (e.g. OWASP, SAML, SSO, OAuth, or API Security)
    • Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment
    • Previous insurance industry experience a plus, but not required
