  • Overview

    Assess the most complex operations, determine the level of risk, existing exposures and controls, and the effectiveness of the customer’s application of those controls, both directly and by supporting other Safety Management (SM) staff. Manage the company’s exposure by serving as the risk management business partner between the company, agents and customers as the matrix manager for the company’s SM Technical Specialists. Develop recommendations and provide to the customer to reduce and maintain their level of risk.

     

    While this position does allow you to work from home, you'll need to able to travel to our Branchville, NJ office with some frequency.

    Responsibilities

    • For commercial property (including COP, BOP, Auto PD and IM), evaluate the operations of larger, more complicated or highest hazard commercial accounts, to assess the level of risk and identify potential loss producing conditions and practices to customers as well as the presence and effectiveness of controls. Consult with Safety Management Specialist's ('SMS'), underwriters and agents on the conditions identified and complete written risk assessment in accordance with internal quality assessment guidelines. 
    • Analyze loss history of accounts to identify loss sources, trends in accident frequency and severity, reach conclusions from the analyses, and provide a clear summary to customers, agents, and underwriters. Actively investigate and monitor industry trends for loss benchmarking and assist other SMS's in utilizing industry data. May develop risk reduction recommendations and/or ongoing risk management objectives. Provide risk management services for customers in need of support and ensure customer’s level of risk is being managed. 
    • Manage work scheduling in order to meet both internal and external customer needs by coordinating the assignments for all SM technical specialists including sharing these resources across regions. 
    • Prepare and present high level technical presentations and risk management training programs to internal and external customers on a variety of risk management topics and issues.
    • Facilitate/coordinate onsite classroom/Web training on complex property, normal loss expectancy (NLE), sprinkler system evaluations, building codes and other skills.
    • In partnership with claims and the Property/Inland Marine Line of Business Leader, participate in large loss reviews, coordinate post loss surveys/inspections by SMS staff to develop lessons learned, gain insight into NLE assessments and improve training. 
    • To support the Safety Management Quality Assurance (QA) program, conduct QAs as required by the QA program. For those risks with NLE calculations, perform onsite follow-up surveys as requested to both assess the survey overall and the NLE calculation as part of the QA.
    • Mentor less experienced team members on larger, more complex accounts. Conduct ride-along surveys to enhance the knowledge and skills of SMS's. Work on notable projects at the request of corporate Underwriting, corporate SM or the regions.
    • Oversee the company’s Fleet Management training activities, driving implementation with agents and insureds, working with each regional safety operations manager. 
    • Independently seek opportunities to increase skills, knowledge and capabilities within area of specialty through self-education.
    • Car travel represents approximately 25% of employee’s time.  

    Qualifications

    • Proficiency in assessing and managing risk in all major commercial lines of business developed through 7+ years of significant field based experience with 3+ years of masterly level ability in one or more commercial line of business and/or business segment.
    • Exceptional problem solving abilities along with ability to apply OSHA, NFPA and other applicable technical standards. Risk evaluation and assessment techniques of various exposures and controls by established line of business including a specialization in complex property risks.
    • Ability to travel and meet with customers and agents to assess and maintain risk.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and agents and encourage the implementation of risk management strategies to reduce the level of risk and the potential for loss.
    • Must be able to build effective business partnerships with internal team members and agents.
    • Strong PC skills including all Microsoft Office products.
    • College degree in related discipline is preferred.
    • Successful completion of INS 21 (Property and Liability Insurance Principles) and INS 23 (Commercial Insurance) is preferred.
    • Must have valid state-issued driver’s license in good standing.
